Happy dog with stick in its mouth.

If you’re like the majority of dog owners, you may view the connection between you and your dog as one of the most meaningful, satisfying relationships in your life. Without a doubt, faithful, trusty dogs are ideal companions who always have our safety, comfort, and well-being in mind. In exchange, dog owners are highly invested in their dog’s day-to-day wellness and typically go the extra mile to ensure long-term health.

You probably celebrate your dog every day, all year round, but National Dog Month is a special chance to shower them with affection and attention.

Benefits of Owning a Dog

Life is simply better with dogs. Living together and sharing space reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation, and can stave off anxiety and depression. Physically, dog ownership can lower blood pressure, promote movement and exercise, and relieve stress that builds up in the body.

Bonding With Your Dog

As pack animals, dogs are deeply tied to their owners and members of the immediate family unit (which can include friends and even neighbors). As such, they seek out every possible opportunity to play, snuggle, follow, and simply be in the same room as the people they love.

If you’ve been curious about additional ways to bond with your dog, we are happy to recommend the following:

  • Try some delicious DIY doggie treats or pupsicles to make together
  • Take a different route for their regular walk
  • Check out a different dog park every week
  • Go swimming or paddle boarding together (don’t forget the life jackets!)
  • Go for a new hike every week
  • Check out a different river path or beach
  • Play with them every day (always rotate toys to keep them interesting)
  • Sign up for training classes or agility training
  • Spend time grooming them and brushing their teeth
  • Learn more about canine body language so you can better read their emotions
  • Establish and maintain a routine that prioritizes their basic needs
  • Give them space when they need it and never force them to participate in household activities

Dog Health and Wellness

A great way to celebrate National Dog Month is to take a long look at how you’ve been able to adapt to your dog’s needs as they age. Routine wellness exams are designed to identify potential problems early so we can address them. In this way, dog owners can look to improve and promote the following aspects of canine health and wellness:

  • Dental care
  • Nutrition and weight
  • Exercise requirements
  • Socialization
  • Behavior
  • Parasite prevention
  • Vaccinations
  • Grooming
