They cannot get comfortable, making snuggling a challenge, and they wake us up at night with that not-so-pleasant paw licking sound. Worst of all is just knowing your best friend is struggling to relax.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">And itchiness in pets goes way beyond scratching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most common signs of an itchy pet are:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paw licking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fur loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barbering (broken fur)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scooting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head shaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scratching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biting (their skin, paws, nails)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restlessness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rubbing on the floor and furniture and, well, everything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where we come in. Because itching is a <strong>symptom<\/strong>. It\u2019s <strong>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/dog-owners\/skin-disorders-of-dogs\/itching-pruritus-in-dogs\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/dog-owners\/skin-disorders-of-dogs\/itching-pruritus-in-dogs\">sign that something is wrong<\/a> and their scratching can make those problems worse<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what is causing your pet\u2019s itching? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Itching in pets is often caused by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Fleas or other parasites<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fleas don\u2019t live on your pet. They jump on, enjoy a blood meal (gross), and hop off to hide beneath floor boards, baseboards, and soft furniture until they get hungry again. But their bite lingers! And some pets are even allergic to them, making that itch so much worse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Allergies<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike humans, pets rarely exhibit upper respiratory symptoms when exposed to environmental allergens like pollen. Instead, their skin reacts from the contact of those allergens. This causes inflammation, which leads to itching!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Infection<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weakened skin barrier can become susceptible to infections with bacteria, or even fungal organisms (like ringworm). Those infections can be incredibly itchy, and the more they scratch, the weaker that skin barrier becomes, and the more the infection spreads.
